The Pocket Sociologist

Creating an inclusive space is more than a training and/or celebrating how we are all alike. Rather, it is about understanding and celebrating differences. However, many people are fearful of saying and doing the wrong thing and, therefore, say and do nothing. This is where The Pocket Sociologist can help.

When people can bring their whole authentic selves to work and are appreciated and seen for who they are, they are happier, more productive, and more likely to stay with the company.

When individuals have a space to process their confusion that is free of judgment, they are more likely to engage with others who are different from themselves.

True inclusion takes real work and has real benefits. Are you ready to do the work?

Services

Wouldn't it be nice to have a pocket resource to help make sense of society, each other, and how we are all connected? Using the "coach approach," we help empower you to transform your environment. Listed below are some of our services but we are happy to tailor experiences to individual and/or corporate needs.

Facilitated Conversations

Sometimes, we just can't hear each other. We want to be a collaborative and congenial team but we don't understand the other person's perspective. Many times this is rooted in cultural differences. When there is discord or lack of understanding, we work first with the individuals and then regroup to unpack collectively what is going on and how we can better hear and understand each other.

Empowering Conversations

Sometimes we are just stuck. We want to be more inclusive. We understood the DEI training. However, we struggle with the day to day interactions and/or events. In these 1 hour sessions, we work specifically with you and the areas in which you are struggling. Don't retreat from these tough conversations, embrace them! This is how you grow and where we can help.

Day Tripping

On-call conversations

Sometimes you just want to know there is a resource available at set times and on set dates. Unlike our other offerings, this is exclusively for companies who want to offer this benefit to their employees. Employees can sign up for times to discuss quick issues or engage in coaching. Knowing someone will be available to help unpack issues, at set time and date, is a proactive way to avoid conflict and engage in knowledge building.

Amy is so good at what she does. It’s rare to find a facilitator/coach that has the academic cred, emotional intelligence, and badass personality that she brings every day. She makes tackling tough topics – with your professional team, your family or social circle, or with yourself – seem so much less daunting. Her candor, humor, and no-BS-style are just what I needed. I’m lucky to be able to call Amy a colleague, mentor, and friend.

About

Background

Dr. Amy Palder (she/her/hers) is the founder of The Pocket Sociologist. Created specifically to address current issues in our society, The Pocket Sociologist meets clients where they are by providing a pocket resource to answer questions from the everyday confusion to the more complex barriers to change. Encouraging curiosity in a safe space, The Pocket Sociologist enables individuals to achieve their goals of being more inclusive, equitable and empathetic by exploring and deconstructing roadblocks to understanding.

Dr. Amy has spent over 15 years in the classroom and in administrative roles. Considered both “funny” and “engaging”, Dr. Amy often uses humor to make “difficult” topics more accessible.

Dr. Amy has been a keynote diversity speaker, coach, consultant, presented papers at sociological conferences and has led sessions on bystander training. Further, she has conducted workshops on understanding different identities so that we may create safer and more inclusive spaces. Her current key area of focus is on 1:1 empowerment coaching.

Dr. Amy has a BA in Economics from Emory University, a Masters in Taxation from Robinson School of Business at Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Georgia State University.
